Forest Schools

Forest schools is a wonderful way for children to engage in learning whilst outdoors and we are very fortunate to be able to provide this type of learning experience.  Each Class will take turns in attending the Woods throughout the year.

We take part in many activities, from climbing trees to creative and storytelling activities, as well as some time to play.   We also have sessions where we focus on understanding the world in class one and on science or geography in classes 2, 3 and 4. Learning about the world from the world, as well as developing our design and technology whilst we prepare our food. The activities complement the ethos of how children learn, and these experiences allow the children to develop resilience, concentration, problem solving and working together which, in turn, helps them to become lifelong, positive learners.

All of our sessions develop our school Christian values of respect, friendship, trust and perseverance.

For our younger children, we often have a fire, sometimes for warmth and comfort but also for cooking snacks.  For our older children, we will use the fire for cooking our lunches prepared by the children and staff. These usually consist of pasta, stew or rice dishes, bread and pizzas followed by a dessert (s’mores, pancakes or baked fruit).

It is vital that children wear appropriate clothing for the weather. The great British weather can change quickly so children must bring a waterproof coat with a hood. Lots of layers are the best way to stay warm in the colder months, with a waterproof top layer and wellies/walking boots. Please remember that long sleeves and trousers are to be always worn to protect against insects (ticks) and thorny branches.

We warmly welcome volunteers to ensure the sessions take place. If you can help, then please speak to Mrs. Wood in the office to add your name to our timetable.
